From Pop To Rock--Music of the 1950s

Jukebox

The music of the 1950s was an interesting mix of pop standards such as Teresa Brewster’s Music! Music! Music and Rosemary Clooney’s Come On-a My House and fluffy novelties such as Patti Page’s The Doggie In The Window and Hot Diggity by Perry Como. However, by the middle of the decade, things were a-changing. Enter Bill Haley with his Rock Around The Clock, Chuck Berry’s Maybellene and suddenly, a new sound was on the music scene. Then, in 1956 along came a 21-year-old from Memphis, Tennessee---Elvis Presley. Rock ‘n’ Roll had arrived.

Elvis Presley, circa 1957   Elvis hit it big with a rapid fire string of million-selling singles. Including: Heartbreak Hotel; Don’t Be Cruel; and Hound Dog. Teenagers, especially teen girls, were taken with Elvis. He was different from anything else on the radio and they loved it. However, their parents and various other adults were appalled at Elvis. Deeming him “sleazy” and “a sex maniac” All the ruckus ended up making Elvis quite famous.

Ricky Nelson  Another newcomer to the music world in the late 50s was none other than Ricky Nelson. Ricky’s version of I’m Walkin’ sold a million records after he was heard singing it on the TV show The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. (Ozzie and Harriet Nelson were Ricky and brother David’s real-life parents, not just on the show.)

All in all, the music of the 1950s was quite an eclectic mix.
