The music of the 1950s was an interesting mix of pop standards such as Teresa Brewsters Music! Music! Music and Rosemary Clooneys Come On-a My House and fluffy novelties such as Patti Pages The Doggie In The Window and Hot Diggity by Perry Como. However, by the middle of the decade, things were a-changing. Enter Bill Haley with his Rock Around The Clock, Chuck Berrys Maybellene and suddenly, a new sound was on the music scene. Then, in 1956 along came a 21-year-old from Memphis, Tennessee---Elvis Presley. Rock n Roll had arrived.
Elvis hit it big with a rapid fire string of million-selling singles. Including:
Heartbreak Hotel; Dont Be Cruel; and Hound Dog. Teenagers,
especially teen girls, were taken with Elvis. He was different from anything
else on the radio and they loved it. However, their parents and various other
adults were appalled at Elvis. Deeming him sleazy and a sex maniac
All the ruckus ended up making Elvis quite famous.
Another newcomer to the music world in the late 50s was none other than Ricky
Nelson. Rickys version of Im Walkin sold a million records
after he was heard singing it on the TV show The Adventures of Ozzie and
Harriet. (Ozzie and Harriet Nelson were Ricky and brother Davids
real-life parents, not just on the show.)
All in all, the music of the 1950s was quite an eclectic mix.
